The Secret Garden

Jul-6-2008 By admin

The area that was in between my house and my neighbors was just a blank area, nothing of interest. I always wanted to have a place outside to meditate. I decided to plant a garden. Planning a garden, you need to know something about how big the plants will grow, and how well they will look with one another. Home Depot, has a lot of great plants, and you can ask at a local nursery what would go well in your garden. Another thing to consider is how much sun an area gets. This garden got sun most of the day, so I needed plants and flowers that loved the sun, were easy to grow, and needed low maintenance. My area was all grass, so it took awhile to dig up the grass, add top soil, and fertilizer. I made some mistakes. I thought along the back I would plant Gladiolas, because they are tall, then some black eyed Susan’s, and Hostas. It just didn’t work. The Black eyed Susan’s, were so tall you couldn’t see the Gladiola’s at all. I removed the Glad’s, and put them in another part of the yard. The hostas worked with the black eyed Susan’s. The next year I planted some Gerber daisies. I put a nice path down the center of the garden, with pea gravel and bricks that look like tree stumps instead of bricks. This year it looks fantastic.

I recommend that in the spring, as your perennials come up, you pull out any weeds that come up. Then put Preen down. This prevents weeds from returning. It’s also a good idea, if you hate weeding a garden as much as I do, that you put mulch down. I like cedar mulch. I put mulch on all my gardens after putting Preen on it, so I don’t have to weed to often at all.

Hostas, are mainly leafy green plants, but they do have flowers in June or July. They can be separated in the fall. It’s a good idea to separate them every other year because they are very prolific. The Black Eyed Susan’s are self seeding, and so are the daisies. So my Secret garden comes up every year. I added at the entrance of the garden, an archway, and at the end I made a platform, that I can sit with pillows and meditate on. Add a fountain, and some wind chimes, and you have a great place to meditate, or just enjoy the flowers. In July, I may plant some zinnias, or marigolds to add just a touch of color. The daisies and the Susan’s are very colorful all summer long.

Gardening is a very satisfying hobby. It’s a continuous work in progress. If something isn’t working, try something else. Get creative, and enjoy the fruits of your labors. It is wonderful to get the family involved. My husband helps me with the digging, and planting, and

building of the platform, and arch. I usually pick out the plants, and set them out according to my plan. It feeds into another hobby, taking pictures of the flowers that grow, and making paintings out of them. You may want to give making a garden a try; and find you have a creative side, that can be expressed in your very own garden.

Gardening, Alternative to the Grocery Store

Jun-25-2008 By admin

More people are gardening than ever before. Food prices are rising at an astounding rate because of recent flooding, fires, hurricanes, and tornadoes. Many are concerned about the quality of what they buy in the store, because of the recent Salmonella outbreak across the U.S. in tomatoes, packaged by factories. Another concern is that big farms, soil is depleted or full of toxins. One way to offset this is to grow your own vegetables. Besides, nothing is more tasty and satisfying than having a salad from your own garden. Depending on where you live, many start their gardens from seed. If you live in a northern climate where growing season is short, start out with plants. The first thing that must be done is to decide where to put your vegetable garden. It should be in full sun for at least ¾ of the day. Tomatoes, green peppers, zucchini, onion sets, radishes, and cucumbers are good things to start with. If you have no space in your backyard, or are in an apartment, you can do a container garden. This is planting in a container that sits on your patio. If you don’t even have a patio, you can, in many cities, rent a garden plot for a nominal fee. Once you have decided where to put your garden, you must till the soil, taking out any grass that may have been there previously. Once that is done, it might be good to take a test sample to your local nursery and ask them what, if anything, the soil needs to grow what you planned to grow.

After you have the soil tested, and buy what the nursery told you, mix it in the soil. A layer of topsoil and some fertilizer is good. The soil should be workable, and loose for planting. If you are not doing an organic garden, Preen or its equivalent, is good to prevent weeds. If you have the natural pots that decompose you can put it pot and all in the ground. If not take it out of the pot and break off the hard dirt around the roots, and put it in a hole that you dug. The hole shouldn’t be to narrow, and it can be up to the first set of leaves in depth.

If you want to keep pests at bay naturally, plant Marigolds as a border, most pests don’t like the smell. Water the garden, soaking it nicely, and then step back and admire your work. If it doesn’t rain, water daily in the morning or early afternoon, but not at night, it can cause mold. If you have tomatoes, you may have to put tomato cages over them at this point, because if tomatoes touch the ground they develop black spots. Pick the ripe ones as soon as you can, because birds and other critters will get to them otherwise. Also check the garden daily for weeds if you didn’t use preen, because weeds take up sunshine and nutrients that could be going into your precious vegetables.

When harvest time comes, you can make all kinds of things with your fresh produce. Some people even can or freeze this bounty for the winter months. How rewarding it is when you make spaghetti with the fresh tomatoes you grew and canned yourself, or a wonderful soup, or zucchini bread. So if you are frustrated with produce from the store, try growing your own, it’s fun, and easy.
