Carving flowers from Vegetables

Jul-13-2008 By admin

Why would anyone want be carving flowers from vegetables? Most chefs will tell that you eat with your eyes first, so an unusual and attractive garnish to a sumptuous dish makes the whole dining experience delightful. A garnish always should be edible, so veggies lend themselves easily to carving. Carving flowers from vegetables originated in Thailand, where it has been elevated to an art form.

Originally only the high born Royal classes were exposed to this ancient art form. Today, you can get a book on the internet. Many Culinary students learn about carving flowers from vegetables in culinary school. However, they will never match the elaborate designs of the Thai Royal court of old. The Siamese Royal Court, taught women for many years the art of carving flowers from vegetables among many other practices to make food, music, and clothes works of art.

The best vegetables for carving are cucumbers, onions, melons, pumpkins, tomatoes, radishes, potatoes, and squash. Many of these were used for carving flowers from vegetables, but also for making elaborate birds, dragons, and boats for them to sit in. A lot of fruits were also carved into flowers, and banana leaves were often woven into baskets to hold food in. Talk about containers you can eat. Well you can’t eat banana leaves, but some of the other things they used for containers were edible. Four star hotels in Thailand still practice this art of carving flowers from vegetables. I looked at the pictures from some of the books, and they don’t even look like vegetables, they look like beautiful flowers. There were even some in the shape of a dragon. The presentation doesn’t even look like food. Once a year in Thailand they have a great competition to keep this art alive.

There is a company in my home town called Incredible Edibles, which carve flowers from fruits, and make different bouquets of them. I sent one to my husbands work for his birthday, and he shared it with his coworkers. He thought it was the most unusual gift he had ever received from me. Then of course there is the Blooming Onion, at the Outback steak house. Not as ornate as the carving flowers from vegetables that appear in Thailand, but it sure tastes good. You can’t go wrong with deep fried onions and dip.

How impressive it would be if the dip was served in an onion carved into a flower. I don’t think a chain restaurant like Outback really cares that much about it though.

I have never had a desire to be carving flowers from vegetables, but from what I have seen, you need very sharp, knives. There are actually sets that are sold for this very art. There were numerous books, and videos to show you how to do this for your family. I imagine it would be very impressive to show off your knife skills in this manner. It could be a very creative outlet, and since you eat what you make, you have a never ending opportunity to be carving flowers from vegetables.

Symbolic meanings of Flowers

Jul-11-2008 By admin

Flowers are great anytime, but one thing I didn’t realize is there are symbolic meanings of flowers. Some of my favorite flowers to give and receive are roses. I grow them in my garden, and my husband gives them to me all the time. In roses, it’s the color that has the symbolic meaning. A red rose, or even better, a dozen red roses, represents passion. If you want unity, and what man doesn’t want to be united with his lady, mix the red roses with white ones. Burgundy in a rose represents, beauty. So if you want to tell your girl she is a beauty get the burgundy rose. Of course it helps if you tell her of the symbolism, not all of us know these things. Now to call her a rare beauty, buy her an orchid. They are the symbol for rare beauty, and what woman doesn’t love an orchid? Don’t however; give your love a gardenia for it means a secret untold love. That’s a good reason for an altercation if the she knows the symbolic meanings of flowers. Not a good choice if you’re telling her you love her. There are a lot of flowers that mean love, the red tulip, red chrysanthemum, and the forget-me-not. White sweetheart roses tell the receiver they are to young for love. Just plain sweetheart roses mean, honey or dear. Sounds like something to give grandmother.

The symbolic meanings of Flowers are all through history. The rose is often a symbol of the Virgin Mary. Many of those that say they have seen visions of the Virgin Mary have always said they smelled roses. Some even saw roses left by her. In the movie “The DaVinci Code” the rose was also a symbol for Mary Magdalene. The Lotus flower is all over Egyptian hieroglyphs and also in Chinese culture. Even though Ivy isn’t a flower, it’s all over Celtic art, and represents fidelity. Shakespeare even had symbolic meanings of flowers. In one of his scenes he has a crazed Ophelia, handing flowers out to the people at court, and with each flower she gave a meaning of it.

At every great event in a person’s life there are flowers. The most notable ones are weddings, and funerals. For a wedding, apple blossom might be a good one; it means hope, good fortune and better things to come. Nice sentiment for a wedding. Most of the flowers aforementioned for love would be good for a funeral. Conveying your love and devotion to the one passed on can be said without saying a word, if it’s conveyed in the symbolic meanings of flowers. Calla lilies are common for funerals, but I don’t think it’s because of the meaning. Calla lilies mean splendid beauty. There is nothing beautiful about being dead. Perhaps there is more than one meaning for a Calla Lily. Listed here are just a few of the symbolic meanings of flowers. So if you give a flower, think what it is that flower is conveying, make sure it matches the intent that it’s given in.
